Contract Duration: One (1) year, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs.
Job Summary
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Expert supports the Alliance Senior Director (ASD) in designing, developing, and deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions to strengthen research, consultancy, and program implementation activities at ABH Partners. Working closely with researchers, software developers, epidemiologists, data managers, statisticians, GIS specialists, and the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) team, the AI Expert will lead the development of predictive models, advanced analytics, and AI-enabled decision-support systems by integrating health, climate, environmental, demographic, socioeconomic, and geospatial data. The position also provides technical leadership in database design, data integration, AI model deployment, and capacity building to ensure innovative, scalable, and evidence-driven solutions that support organizational and client needs.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of ABH Management, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Alliance Senior Director (ASD), and in collaboration with project teams and other business divisions, the AI Expert will perform the following duties:
- AI Model Development
The AI Expert will:
- Design, develop, validate, and deploy AI and machine learning models for predicting health outcomes and supporting evidence-based decision-making.
- Develop predictive models integrating health, epidemiological, climate, environmental, demographic, socioeconomic, and geospatial data.
- Apply statistical, machine learning, deep learning, and ensemble modeling techniques to solve complex public health and development challenges.
- Perform feature engineering, feature selection, and model optimization to improve prediction accuracy and efficiency.
- Develop spatial and temporal predictive models using time-series and geospatial datasets.
- Evaluate and compare alternative modeling approaches using appropriate performance metrics.
- Apply explainable AI techniques to improve model transparency and interpretability.
- Maintain documentation of model assumptions, algorithms, validation procedures, and performance.
- Database Design and Implementation
The AI Expert will:
- Design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable, and interoperable databases supporting AI applications and advanced analytics.
- Develop database schemas for health, surveillance, climate, environmental, demographic, socioeconomic, and geospatial datasets.
- Optimize database performance through indexing, normalization, and query optimization.
- Develop and maintain ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) workflows for integrating data from multiple sources.
- Ensure data security, backup, disaster recovery, and access control mechanisms are implemented.
- Develop APIs and other data services to facilitate integration between databases, AI models, and digital platforms.
- Support compliance with organizational, ethical, and donor requirements for data management.
- Data Integration and Analytics
The AI Expert will:
- Integrate and harmonize data from health information systems, disease surveillance systems, climate information systems, remote sensing platforms, surveys, and other relevant sources.
- Develop automated workflows for data preprocessing, cleaning, transformation, and feature extraction.
- Conduct advanced statistical analyses and predictive analytics using appropriate software and programming languages.
- Prepare analytical datasets for AI model development and operational deployment.
- Support project teams in interpreting analytical findings and translating them into actionable recommendations.
- AI Model Evaluation and Deployment
The AI Expert will:
- Conduct model validation using appropriate statistical and machine learning techniques.
- Monitor model performance and implement continuous improvement and retraining strategies.
- Deploy AI models into operational environments and decision-support platforms.
- Develop automated prediction pipelines and forecasting systems.
- Support integration of AI models into dashboards, digital platforms, and early warning systems.
- Ensure AI solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with responsible AI principles.
- Technical Support and Capacity Building
The AI Expert will:
- Provide technical guidance to project teams on AI, machine learning, predictive analytics, and database management.
- Train and mentor project staff on AI concepts, machine learning applications, database management, and analytical methods.
- Develop user manuals, technical documentation, and standard operating procedures.
- Provide ongoing technical support during implementation of AI-enabled projects.
- Promote innovation and adoption of emerging AI technologies across the organization.
- Research and Innovation
The AI Expert will:
- Support the development of AI-related research proposals and technical concepts.
- Contribute to scientific publications, technical reports, conference presentations, and knowledge products.
- Stay informed of advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, health informatics, and data science.
- Identify innovative AI applications that strengthen research, consultancy, and program implementation activities.
- Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
The AI Expert will:
- Work closely with government institutions, academic partners, technology partners, and development organizations to strengthen AI-enabled data systems and analytics.
- Support data sharing, interoperability, and collaborative research initiatives.
- Represent ABH Partners in technical meetings, workshops, and conferences related to artificial intelligence, digital health, and data science, as delegated.
- Other Responsibilities
The AI Expert will:
- Support organizational digital transformation initiatives involving AI and advanced analytics.
- Contribute to organizational learning and continuous improvement.
- Undertake any other duties assigned by the Alliance Senior Director or ABH Partners Management.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field.
Experience
- At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, database design, or data science.
- Demonstrated experience developing and deploying AI or machine learning models using health, climate, environmental, demographic, or geospatial datasets.
- Experience designing and managing relational and spatial databases.
- Experience integrating data from multiple information systems and external data sources.
- Experience supporting research, public health, digital health, monitoring and evaluation, or donor-funded projects is highly desirable.
- Experience working on multicountry research or implementation projects is an advantage.
