St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC), is conducting the SALSA Project, a clinical trial in three sites in African: Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria; and is seeking to fill the position of Research Nurse, for the Research Project.
Position: Research Nurse

Reporting to: Study Coordinator & Principal Investigator
Location: St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Position Summary
Study Nurses will be the front-line implementers of the trial, directly interacting with mothers and infants. He/she will be responsible for screening, enrolment, consent, collection and review of data, collection of vital signs during study procedures and Follow Up of enrolled participants until end of study.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Screening & Enrolment
- Screen newborns according to the eligibility criteria.
- Obtain informed consent from mothers/fathers or legally authorized representatives in culturally sensitive and ethical manner.
- Enroll eligible newborns to study in consultation with the study Physician and site PI.
- Eligibility assessment and confirmation
- Informs Study team about the case when potential participnant is deemed imminent.
- Closely monitors the newborn’s status after birth and admission to NICU to determine eligibility.
- Documents clinical details and completes checklists confirming inclusion criteria and absence of exclusion criteria.
- Consults with delegated investigator regarding enrollment.
- Study Procedure
- Confirm Randomization arm and ensure correct form is used.
- Follow the study protocol and SOP.
- Collection of data points in real time.
- Vital signs monitoring in collaboration with clinical team.
- Documentation of processes using GCP and GDP principles.
- Follow up
- Daily perusal of all infants randomized to study until end of study occurs
- Follow up forms completed and maintained in confidential and secure location for daily use.
- Communicating AEs and SAEs between clinical and research staff.
- Data entry
- Data entry in timely manner
- Filing and maintaining of records to assist with monitoring/audits and final verification.
Required Qualification
- BSc degree in Nursing/Midwifery with active license.
- Minimum 2 and above years of experience in neonatal/pediatric care.
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certificate
- Clinical research or trial experience preferred.
- Competent skills in Vital sign and anthropometric measurements in Newborns.
- Good interpersonal and counseling skills.
- Experience with electronic data capture systems or clinical research databases
